The national measles-rubella vaccination campaign has started in Bangladesh. Due to the strike of the Health Assistants the campaign was delayed. Now it has started and run at full speed. People are bringing their child to the nearest campaign place to vaccinate the child. There are about 26000 health workers who are demanding a pay hike. The root level of health workers are health inspectors, assistant health inspector, and health assistants – under the health ministry are trying to raise the basic salary for a long time. But the government are rarely paying attention to their crying needs. It is really tough to run a family with such a poor income. They have a major contribution towards achieving MDG goals and various international awards. But they never get to taste the honey of hard work they put in. Dr. Md Shamsul Haque, Director of the Expanded Programme on Immunization (EPI) said a total 3.40 crore children, age between nine months and under 10 years, will be vaccinated across the country to prevent measles and control rubella. The Measles-Rubella Vaccination Campaign will end on January 24, 2020.
The EPI Vaccine Schedule
The Extended Program on Immunization (EPI) began in 1979 in Bangladesh. Since then these health workers are working to provide vaccines to the root level people. The current vaccination schedule provides vaccines against 10 diseases.

What are Measles and Rubella?
Measles is a highly contagious disease caused by the Rubeola virus, an RNA Paramyxovirus, and is characterized by a cough, coryza, conjunctivitis, fever, and a distinctive maculopapular rash.

Rubella is caused by the rubella virus. It is also known as German measles or three-day measles. Rubella is a contagious disease. It is very dangerous for pregnant mothers and unborn babies. It causes Congenital rubella syndrome. Young children and adults may not affect much. If an unvaccinated pregnant woman gets infected with the rubella virus she can have a miscarriage (the loss of a pregnancy during the first 23 weeks), or her baby can die just after birth. Also, she can pass the virus to her unborn baby who can develop serious birth defects such as—
- heart problems,
- loss of hearing and eyesight,
- intellectual disability, and
- liver or spleen damage.
Currently, the Rubella vaccine is given through the MMR vaccination schedule.
All children aged 9 months to 10 years must take this vaccine. The Routine EPI vaccination will be continued. This will be counted as an extra dose. This vaccine is given in subcutaneous injection.
হাম ও রুবেলা টিকাদান ( এমআর ভ্যাক্সিন) ক্যাম্পেইন চলছে সারা দেশে। সবারই এই নিয়ে দেখছি নানা প্রশ্ন, মত দ্বিমত চলছে। তাই ছোট করে কনফিউশান দূর করার জন্য লিখছি।
★এটা কিসের টিকা?
মিজেলস এবং রুবেলা নামক দুটো ভাইরাসের বিরুদ্ধে একসাথে দেয়া এই টিকা শিশুকে হাম ও রুবেলা নামক দুটো মারাত্মক ক্ষতিকর রোগ থেকে রক্ষা করা।
★ কারা পাবে?
৯ মাস থেকে ১০ বছরের নিচে যেসকল শিশু আছে সবাই এক ডোজ করে এই টিকা পাবে। সরকারি টিকাতে এর যে দুটো ডোজ আছে, ৯ মাস ও ১৫ মাসে ; এটা তারসাথে অতিরিক্ত ডোজ হিসেবে গণনা করা হবে। অর্থাৎ যাদের বয়স ৯মাস থেকে ১০ বছর তাদের প্রত্যেকেই নিয়মিত ২টা ডোজের পাশাপাশি এই ডোজটাও পাবে যখনই টিকা দিয়ে থাকুক।
★ কেন পাবে?
দেখা গেছে, এমআর ভ্যাক্সিন পাওয়ার পরও অনেকের হাম হচ্ছে। অনেকই একটা ডোজ দিয়ে পরবর্তীতে ২য় ডোজটা মিস করছেন। অনেকসময় টিকা ঠিকমতো কার্যকর হচ্ছে না নানা জটিলতায়। এজন্য, হাম রোগটাকে পোলিও রোগের মত একেবারে নির্মূল করার জন্য এই অতিরিক্ত ডোজটি কার্যকর হবে বলে ধরে নেয়া হচ্ছে।
★ ছবিতে দেখা যাচ্ছে মুখে ভিটামিন এ ক্যাপসূল খাওয়ানো হচ্ছে। তাহলে এমআর টিকাও কি মুখে খাওয়ার ভ্যাক্সিন?
জ্বি না, এটা চামড়ার নিচে দেয়ার ইনজেকশন। রুটিন টিকার দুটো ডোজ যেভাবে সাবকিউটেনিয়াস দেয়া হয়েছে, এটাও তেমনই দেয়া হবে।
★ কতদিন পর্যন্ত এই টিকা দেয়া হবে?
১২ই ডিসেম্বর শুরু হওয়া এই ক্যাম্পেইন আগামী বছর ২৪শে জানুয়ারি পর্যন্ত চলবে।
